August has always been a special month for us, its a month of reflections and taking stock of where we are in life. Its the month we both celebrate our birthdays [on the same date] and the month when we plan for our biggest adventures.
This August hasn’t been like the previous 11 Augusts. We didn’t travel abroad, we didn’t host a grand party, nor did we take any time away from work. We did reflect though… Through out all these years, the only constant has been each others company, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. In more ways than one, we have been lucky/blessed. We have each other, are in good health [albeit declining through our own doings], jobs we enjoy, great friends and siblings who have got our backs.
It was after this kind of mushy talk in 2017 when we decided we want a place to call our own [one of us more than the other 😀 ] . A lot of other things were happening at the same time too, I had just turned 30 [and had a great time with my friends turning it], our flat had a new owner, and we were close to a year away from the general elections. Not all of these had a correlation with our decision to buy a property, but they did matter. The factor that mattered most was how happy we were. I could picture my life anywhere in the world, but I couldn’t picture it without the people in my world. And so, we decided that if we were to live in Fiji for a long[er] time, we might as well get a place where we wont mind growing old. And so the hunt began…
It isn’t easy finding a place which is strategically located, is built well, and has nice views…there are compromises to be made. However, it wasn’t long before we found something in which we could picture ourselves growing old…the downside was, it needed a lot of TLC. It had potential though; so we committed. After the initial high of becoming first-time home owners, the stress begun. It doesn’t matter how much you anticipate the challenges, or how well planned you are, things will still fall apart and screw up your timelines. There are some lessons you just have to learn on your own.
It has been almost a year since we started hands-on with the renovation and things are starting to look better. We are super excited and proud of ourselves to say the least. The house now looks so different to when we purchased it and I am just so excited to do room reveals. So this is the first installment of a series of posts on our renovation project.
